I'm not a writer. I want to be and have wanted to be for as long as I can remember. But writers write, and I don't write. I know, I know. You can point out that I'm writing now but that's not what I mean, not at all. My personal definition of "writing", and let me be the first to say this definition isn't meant to confine anyone else but myself, but my personal definition of writing is to take an idea and finish it.
And so despite me actually writing quite a lot I have not managed to finish anything, satisfactorily or otherwise. I have had ideas I thought would make a good novel but writing two or three chapters over a span of many years does not make one a writer. I have had ideas I thought would make a good short story but instead of writing something meant to be read in one sitting I've tended to write something in one sitting and then never come back to the idea. Or if I have returned, it wasn't long enough to finish it still.
I've talked to others about partnering on stories or a novel idea. One of these people is an actual writer and while he hasn't been published quite yet I am certain he will be and has finished at least one novel length project that is quite worthy of being read both for his wit and style but also for his deeper understanding of the human condition. Unfortunately I think I scared him off with my seeming reluctance to commit to one idea or another that was actually more my hidden ADD than my not liking any one or another idea. I also was guilty of a greater crime, one that a real writer would know better than to do.
He gave me his draft to read and I didn't give it my full attention. I can't blame ADD or family obligations or chronic pain or any number of full moons or anything else. Because this is an example of another thing writers do that I did not. Writers read. Writers read anything a friend gives you to read for feedback and I did not.
As of this writing I am not planning on giving out this address to anyone else. Because a writer who is not a writer doesn't deserve to be read. Especially if what he is writing isn't even writing. Understand? Besides, this self deprecating bullshit is not cool, is not attractive and it is not tolerated.
So with that said, welcome all you imaginary and invisible readers. I hope you enjoy the half written works, the chapters of novels never to be completed, the short stories that are, truth be told, far, far too short and the occasional unsolicited observations just to mix things up.
